Carotid Endarterectomy: Surgical procedure used to correct carotid stenosis, a medical condition signifying a narrowing of the carotid arteries which can cause temporary ischemic attacks (strokes). The surgeon opens the blocked section of the carotid artery and removes the atheromatous plaque. For a more detailed description of this procedure, please visit the CEA page on Vascular Web. Stroke is a serious risk following a CEA and the national average for such a complication is 1-3%. Coastal Surgical Specialists however has maintained a stroke rate of less than 1% for 30 days following surgery.
AAA Repair: An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is a dilatation of the major blood artery that provides blood to the lower part of your body. A rupture of an AAA is almost always fatal making early diagnosis and repair essential. Currently there are 2 treatment options available depending on your symptoms and overall health.
1. Open Aneurysm Repair during which the surgeon replaces the weakened section of the aorta with an aortic graft
2. Endovascular Stent Graft during which the surgeon makes a small incision near the groin and guides a stent graft through catheters inside your blood vessels while observing on an X-Ray. While this procedure is less invasive than open surgery, it requires more frequent follow up visits and maintenance procedures
